In British Champs, just the one. Lots in the English Champs though.

Including all categories, in the British Champs:
    8 Rob Hope (2007-2017, 4 open + 4 v40)
    7 Ian Holmes (1996-2016, 4 open + 2 v40 + 1 v50)
    6 Nicola Davies (1995-2012, 4 v40 + 2 v50)
    6 Colin Donnelly (1987-2004, 3 open + 3 v40)
    5 Angela Mudge (1997-2008, 5 open)
    5 Lou Roberts (2002-2017, 3 open + 2 v40)

In the English Champs, where there are more categories:
    17 Wendy Dodds (2000-2016, 1 v40 + 4 v50 + 8 v55 + 3 v60 + 1 v65) - would be equivalent to 8 without 5 year categories
    14 Sally Newman (2000-2015, 2 open + 7 v40 + 3 v45 + 2 v50) - equivalent to 11
    14 Dave Neill (1996-2013, 8 v40 + 1 v45 + 2 v50 + 3 v55) - equivalent to 10
    13 Ian Holmes (1996-2016, 5 open + 4 v40 + 3 v45 + 1 v50) - equivalent to 10
    12 Mark Roberts (1997-2014, 1 open + 2 v40 + 6 v45 + 3 v50) - equivalent to 6
    8 Simon Bailey (2004-2016, 8 open) - equivalent to 8

I've just tallied that from a quick check of past champions, so is not 100% guaranteed to be correct, but I think it is!

    So...
Rob Hope has won more British gold medals than anyone
Angela Mudge has won more British open golds than anyone

    +1 for fishwick

Vic and Fin have the palmares. Maybe if Fin did a few Lakeland classics it would allow better comparison to previous generations? Were Ricky Lightfoot race the championships and perform well then he could be considered.

Potentials coming through include Sam Tosh (if he gets a run without injury). I think he is one of the best younger all-round fell runners at the moment, when fit he often wins short and medium champs races, but can do well on the Lakeland super-longs. Flexibility is the mark of a good fell runner, as is emphasised by our championship system!

We will know who are the greats of the modern era in 20-30 years' time, when their names are still down as record holders for races.

Currently the men's records for the races up and down the highest mountains in both Wales and Scotland are still held by Kenny Stuart (unfortunately the Scafell Pike race wasn't started until after Stuart's greatest years). All four Lakeland AL races with "dale" in the name have men's records that are over 30 years old. No wonder people look back nostalgically to the greats of yesteryear.
In his lifetime he suffered from unreality, as do so many Englishmen.

Ask Simon Booth about the new bridge he had to go over (can't remember the year) at end of ennerdale!...
Of course the best runners now probably aren't at the standards of those from the 80s, but courses have changed (e.g. Wasdale was 90s longer this year, Carl still ran fastest time in 20-odd years; Borrowdale start now significantly longer, whatever Billy says). There was talk of Keswick changing the SKidaw records to reflect the new course but Kenny kicked up rough about it apparently - maybe it'd be worthwhile races that have changed severely to have 'race records' and 'course records'? e.g. Fin has got close to Kenny's Ben record, but had to deviate from the line Kenny could take.

Add in to this, summers have generally been wetter (tbc this year) - the trod from Bessyboot to Esk Hause is now often a quaggy trudge when (according to those in the know) you used to be able to boot it along there 20 years back.

Of course you get some standouts - e.g. The Langdale record. I asked an older Pennine member of Pennine if the Kinder Downfall route had changed much as the record (1995, 61 mins, M. Kinch) is just daft - he said no, other than a bit more flag-stoning now, the record was set when it was a Championship race and he even blew that field away by a couple of minutes! You consider that since 2010 years only myself, Rob Little, dave aucott and Al Campbell have run under 69 for it (the first two with bonus snow flurries!)

The top 0.1% of runners have a lot of choice now. It is so easy for them (some with sponsership deals) to jet off to europe and the states to partake in some of their classics. They are just not staying at home to concentrate on the domestic records.

Thank you Bill, very interesting and I am pleased to recall that many years ago in my series of Fellrunner Profiles of then active runners I included both Angela and Rob - and also Ian Holmes, Dave Neill and Sally Newman.
