    WildBoar Fell Trig busted

    http://myyorkshiredales.co.uk/trig-p...ll-trig-point/

Found this trig tumbled down and in 3 pieces today. A real shame but perhaps I'm being overly sentimental. I ran up here fairly recently, a few weeks ago, and all seemed well. I'm guessing general attrition coupled with this week's Storm Hector (100 mph winds on Great Dun Fell), rather than a wanton act of vandalism. I understand the OS haven't bothered maintaining these for years as they're obsolete for their original purpose. However, I thought some had been lately classed as national monuments, but perhaps I'm mistaken. Worth crowd funding a rescue or best left to the inevitable whims of entrophy?

As organisers of the Really Wild Boar Fell Race we would be interested to have a look at photos of the damage. We would definitely be interested in restoring the trig to its former glory.

Probably won't get the chance to visit again for the next few weeks ( I was house sitting near by), but I'll carry my phone on the next outing to the fell; unless someone can take some snaps beforehand. Kirkby Stephen Rotary Club, who organise the annual Mallerstang Yomp, might be supportive of a rebuild too.

Since becoming surplus to the requirements of the OS many trig pillars have been adopted by local fell enthusiasts. Several in Bowland get a regular lick of white paint to keep them prominent. I've heard of one that has a red rose stencilled on it.
I was a bit of an oddball until I was abducted by aliens; but I'm perfectly OK now!

Well that is more discreet than a sign saying "You Are Here"

I emailed the Kirkby Stephen Rotary Yomp Course Coordinator who replied that "one of our Yomp marshals at that checkpoint is a professional stone-waller and he has offered to rebuild it. We shall keep him reminded of it".

So, looks like it will be fixed. Great news!

The really horrifying thought would be that you Yorkies might paint one bright red in order to stencil a white rose on to it!

And the "good guy" ended up in Leicester Cathedral.
In his lifetime he suffered from unreality, as do so many Englishmen.
