well said Tussockface. no need to assume that there's anything pernicious about this RO organising an event (labelled a challenge rather than a race I think) on this route, especially with the backing of the DWA. he's not some evil profiteering capitalist organisation as far as i can tell, just a guy who puts a lot into his passion and small business (I doubt it will make him rich - but what do i know) of organising ultra races in and around Otley. seems to have created a friendly and loyal ultra-running community. i haven't raced any of his races yet but am shortly to do one, and am looking forward to it. good luck to him.

that said, i do see the attraction of running a route like this under your own steam or with friends as several on this forum have done, i'm sure.

As for undue commercialisation, Ryk Downes, Mr Punk Panther, appears to me to be motivated by his own genuine enthusiasm for long-distance events. I've done a couple of his ultras this year and been impressed by how hard he's worked to put on some great races, sometimes for the benefit of only a small number of participants. I think WD's worries about any "attendant razz-a-matazz of a support caravan" can be allayed.

Well said TF, the Punk Panther races are low-key and with pricing on a par with other regional Ultra-series - thinking the Hardmoors series, that inspired Ryk. Having marshalled a couple last year (checkpoint refreshments from a car boot or sturdy dry-stone wall), and been at the start line for last year's Reservoir Dogs I've noticed no commercialisation at all. Finally planning on running my first PP race in just over 3 weeks - a mere 53k so not quite up to Dales Way distance.

Fair do's guys; I stand corrected on this particular event. But as Tussock Face writes, my general observations do hold good for the way in which other long distance challenges have been exploited as commercially driven races.
I was a bit of an oddball until I was abducted by aliens; but I'm perfectly OK now!

Crumbs. I doubt that even the Wasdale or OCT races can meet those financial returns. I currently scratching my head for the cheapest entry fee with food provided equation!!!

My figures equate to a small locals’ ‘timed training run’ event Simon held before Christmas. I bet you could still find value like that in Strider the LDWA journal though

I am sure in the halcyon days of the forum, this would have generated a thread on best value per mile events. From a food perspective several Lake District classics stand out as does my recollection of The Mickleden Straddle too. In terms of cost per mile I would guess that LDWA events must be right up there, with many of the new ultra events we are bombarded with on Facebook, right down at the bottom!
It always amazes me that so many people seem to be happy to pay big money to enter a commercial race but shy away from their local cross country or club races which cost nothing or next to nothing.

All-inclusive and FOC Parkrun continues to grow. I think Witton has posted before that XC and in particular ‘the town 5 or 10K’ are events that are suffering. Why pay £15 to run for 20 or 45 mins when you can do a well organised three miler every Saturday for free?

I’ll have a look at Strider and see what I can find re value 😉
