Had a great recce this week over two days. Great route. Travs is quite right, there is nothing to be gained by going the long way round Place Fell - the path is a constant switchback and full of rocks and roots.

Take an early start and get your finger out , the local forecast I heard earlier put the worst of the weather after lunch.

Have to say I am looking forward to a dump of snow but I somehow doubt it will be any great shakes.

Driving up in a couple of hours. Had planned to start at 8am and unless conditions look absolutely desperate i'll probably stick with that.

Bringing microspikes with me, and looking at the forecast will probably be carrying them in all cases tomorrow.

I'm thinking 8am start with a belly full of porridge. The wind is the major factor. Let's hope we all have a great day out!

Hearing that it's been shortened... just going to the bridge on the zig-zags at Swart Beck, then turning round.

Frustrating, but having read the various weather reports it's the correct decision.

Back for curry in Keswick later then!

Thought I'd resurect an old thread rather than start a new one.

It's my first TdeH this year. I'm slightly bricking it, although I was really happy to realise it's 61k not the 68 I thought it was!

I recced the Helvellyn loop and wore very much the wrong shoes (Salomon Ultraglides), what are peoples shoe of choice? I'm thinking something cushioned but grippy like the La Sportiva Mutant. Any suggestions?
