    New to fell running

    Hi

I’ve been a runner for a number of years (currently out of practice and unfit), have run a marathon and have run off road/trail, across country in training. I’ve always liked the look of fell running and would like to find a group to run with. Do they exist?

    Thanks!
    Sam

    Hi Sam.

There are plenty of Fell-running clubs. Some are dedicated solely to Fell-running, some do Road/Fell/cross-country. Depends whereabouts in the country you are and what is nearby.

Of course you don't necessarily need to join a club (although I'd certainly recommend it), you can just rock up to any race you like, within reason, pay the fee, and off you go. Fellrunners are a friendly and helpful bunch, and people will be happy to offer advice.

To find races you can use the FRA website, but of course you should join the FRA, it's around £16 per year and you get the fixture handbook each year, and of course the fantastic magazine 3 times a year (worth far more than the yearly fee on its own).

    Welcome Sam.

Pick a local race. Get a pair of fell shoes and give it a go.

Try and get to the prize giving, because unlike road running winners and back markers all mix and socialise together.

    Enjoy

Where are you based Samster? We can give a few suggestions of races and clubs if you like.

Don't do it Sam, its seriously addictive. First a short race to suck you in, then you want longer, harder,
rougher, before you know it you will be doing a mountain marathon, after that there's no way back.

Ha ha ha don't be fooled Sam

Couple of short and medium races then in to the BOFRA series in May.
True fell running at its best.

    Proper Guide's races.

Nothing like giving a newcomer a polarised view of fellrunning eh?

Sam the fell running world is a bit divided and you should ignore rubbish like this and make your own mind up. If you've never really ran on the fells before, you could do a lot worse than join the FRA or just use the race calender to research a few races close to where you live then just do a bit of a reccy run around the course before diving straight in and doing a race. If you can find a club local to you that does a bit of fell training then even better.

    Polarised view???

Ha ha ha better than no view other than join the FRA.

The guides race are the origin of fell races. Then we had the aaa's and amateurs.
    Then the ultra bods.

    And your thoughts are???

PS Enjoy what ever type you choose Sam.

Give me fell races over road races anyday but to be honest at most road races winners and back markers socialise also, its not just limited to fell running.

Do hill reps twice a week for a month.

If you stick it out you will love fell running
