    The dark arts...

There's a bit on the Wales news (BBC internet news) about the WFRA not permitting GPS navigation during fell races - to which I agree.

But a comment from a Paul Dodd of Chepstow harriers is not so keen and commented:
"Fell running seems to be the reserve of traditionalists - to them, a big part of fell running is the dark art of navigating with a compass and a map," he said".

So there you have it, use of a map and compass are now "dark arts", made me chuckle as a start to 2019.

I still sometimes use the dark art of handwriting. And I put spoonfuls of loose tea leaves into a teapot to make tea . . .

I practise the dark art of ringing a bell which is attached to the handlebars of my bike. In fact I did it today!

Aye Matt, "The dark art of map fondling" is how Bowland members refer to "proper" navigation.

Tend to get a bit peed off with these trail-runner types that think it's only about using your legs and an electronic gizzmo ..... until the batteries go flat.

If they aren't prepared to respect and embrace the rich traditions, why do they bother?

You can do the same with most GPS devices to be fair 😜

Disclaimer, I don’t currently own a dedicated GPS device! I have tried out my phone. But it’s not a great option in wet conditions, and to be honest for running I much prefer a paper (laminated) map, much easier to view a large area in one view and plan accordingly. Different in a race I suppose where you’re much more likely to have a set route. But my running is much less defined and unplanned that anything like that.
