Anthony, i saw your route-choice caused some amusement on the Shropshire Fell Running page! Congratulations on the prize though!

Being serious about that route option.... i did take a look at it. But figured the climb from the valley bottom up to Jonathan's Rock had to be getting on for 5mins, and couldn't see the direct route giving the 5 minute saving required to justify it in comparison to the longer route.

Although as you correctly state, it was quite a headwind around the tops.

There are some great photos from the race via the Shropshire Fell Running page, too. With a must-see series of 8 photos for the battle for 4th place; a real masterclass in how to win sprints. And also a runner with odd socks, Pete.

Why do camera-men always position themselves on the steepest section of climbs

Reckon i'd have walked that section if he wasn't there.

Actually it was quite a brutal first 15mins up to the first summit... on the 2019 champs race the start had been out on the road and took a slightly longer (but i think faster) route to the bottom of Yearlet. But this time we were in the field behind the Church, and greeted with a stiff climb up the grass from the start line.
