I have very little interest in politics (to my discredit), but this p****d me off a lot more than it should.
Fair play to the guy. She’s lucky there wasn’t security present or quick to respond, she could have been tasered (or worse).
In the current climate, no matter how valid your protests may (or may not) be, if you go careering round a venue containing high level politicians, then you’ve got to expect some kind of ramifications.
Surprise surprise the BBC (radio 5) were jumping to her defence this morning.
That's probably the biggest issue for me. At an event where the attendees included senior politicians such as the chancellor, where was the security?
With regard to the incident itself, I think Mark Field overreacted. Yes the sense of entitlement these protesters have that makes them they think they can disrupt events willy nilly is annoying. But Field was wrong to manhandle the woman in the way he did, especially shoving her into the pillar. According to the accounts I've read the protestors were peaceful and people were not unduly alarmed by them. If Field really thought the woman was on her way to accost the chancellor he could have simply stood up and blocked her. Don't think I'm being a snowflake, Field was in the wrong.
I think there's a lot of outrage by people who don't agree with this guy's politics. Although I don't vote for his party, I don't think there's much in this. To me, he didn't look like he was trying to shove her into the pillar, I think he was just shoving her out of the way.
As ever, we don't really know the full context here. What happened in the few minutes before the video was started.
Here's a question: do you think it would have been perceived differently if it had been a male protester?
