8-track cartridge? I remember those - a terribly flawed concept.

When cd came out, my Dad said that they wouldn’t catch on and his Stereo 8 was far superior. When I subsequently (mid 1990s) went to music college I found that the majority of audio recordings were being done on VHS tapes then transferred to digital.
    Remember mini disc?

By the way: Lidl waterproofs held up in West Wales admirably today. Gore Tex didn’t!

And I suspect a Mazda is more reliable than a Maserati.

I do remember mini disc, but do you remember the competing technology at the time? DCC - Digital Compact Cassette. It was reputed to have better sound quality due to better compression algorithms. I still have my DCC recorders (portable and Hi-Fi separate). The sound quality was (is) surprisingly good. Both formats are long dead now, though.

Talk about a thread hijack. Dragging it back on track, my most disappointing waterproof jacket was a Montane Minimus smock bought at Lakeland 100 several years ago. I wore it for the race. When the monsoon came down I got wet and almost hypothermic. It was absolute junk. Within no time the internal so-called waterproof layer was coming off in sheets. It couldn't take anything rubbing on it, such as what happens when you wear it. The only intact bits remaining are the taped seams. At least it still passes the kit check. ;-)
