    ROC mountain marathon?

Who’s in? I’ve never been to this bit of Scotland, looks a lot like it could be a Scottish Howgills/Cheviots. Any thoughts on terrain?

I’ve been looking at previous ROC maps, the mapping seems to be getting simpler (if you compare last years to the race down in the Glyders 3 years ago). Less contour detail, less intricate features etc. The controls also seem simpler at last years. Big stream features etc less subtle reentrants

Never heard of these hills before entering the event, but yeah, the OS maps give the impression of Howgill-like terrain. I'm guessing some steep climbs, some contouring, some runnable bits. Certainly looks like it'll be wet underfoot!

Re. the maps, I don't know that they've changed (other than the red/purple), think it's just the nature of the different areas.

It's typical OMM terrain, with lots of bogs and tussocks. Here's a blog and some photos from the Marmot24 there in 2015

You might be right, I do think control choices were simplified. But then maybe it was due to a lack of clear features and route options.

I’m wondering whether I want to scrap my trusty balloon bed and buy a fancy ultralight thermarest....

I use this stuff folded over a couple of times. Not the most comfortable, but warm, light and cheap.

That balloon bed is awesome - never seen those before! What a great idea

It’s the popping of balloons in the middle of the night which is the biggest drawback! But comic shadows are always a plus!

    Haha I can imagine!!

Ever been tempted to fill them with water from a stream for a 'water bed' experience?

It’s an interesting thought the idea of carrying a sopping down sleeping bag is definitely against my lightweight ethos!
