Others might disagree, but the BBC has to make a call one way or the other.

I choose to disagree. BBC is a public service broadcaster...a very unique and therefore treasurable institution. It must take all care not to call things one way or the other and therefore fall into the trap of being a propaganda machine. These are obviously weighty decisions. And I'm certainly of the view that for most of its past, the BBC has actually been an Establishment Service Broadcaster!

That's still a decision though, isn't it? In the case of (accelerated) climate change (caused by humans) they've reached a decision that the fact it's happening is no longer up for reasonable debate. As I say, some might not like that judgement call, but they had to make it one way or another. They might consider they have a moral duty to contribute to the resolution of the earth's dire climate situation and that arguing about whether or not it's happening isn't going to help achieve that.

I'm not saying the BBC always get this stuff right (maybe Brexit is a case in point), but sometimes such editorial decisions are justified.

I agree Wheeze. It is supposed to be neutral, balanced and informative.

Society has a diverse ethnic mix and absolutely it is correct to try and reflect that.

But it also has a mix of opinions.

"How might the next 3 weeks play out? Parliament can, and should, take back control. Having laid down a law to block a No Deal, MPs should be ready to finish what they have started & remove the PM."

This is a tweet by a political TV news editor today. It isn't the BBC, but it's current and makes the point.

I think if a BBC person tweeted this they'd be sacked pretty quickly.

It was a farce in Ireland during the "controversial" gay marriage and abortion referendums. RTE had to be completely impartial, therefore they had to give both sides equal air time. But all the main political parties were on the same side so the anti-abortion and anti-gay marriage side was represented by all these nut-case right-wing religious groups. The rubbish they came out was crazy with the contradicting statements from the various groups.

Trying to be impartial is not easy.

Seems to me Pat that the RTE is like BBC....an Establishment Service Broadcaster. I could imagine that the establishment in Ireland was aghast at those referenda.
