Someone who fancies a couple of weeks off work with a £500 compensation payment from the taxpayer. It's worth a punt - you may get a positive test.
    Do the maths, eh?

    14 days isolation/£500=£250 per week.

    Scepticism is frowned upon.
Seems to be going well in your neck of the woods.
But then, all those new cases are just statistical errors, so you should be fine.

I heard (on the BBC so it must be true), that the sparsely populated Northumberland asked to be included with the other NE areas under the new restrictions as, despite having relatively few cases, many people from the county work in the other 6 newly restricted areas.

Ok, if that's true, then there must be even more people in the densely populated neighbouring authorities to the south of the region, such as the unitary authorities of Darlington, Middlesbrough, Stockton etc, who also have inhabitants working in Newcastle, Sunderland, North and South Tyneside, Gateshead and County Durham. It doesn't make sense (if theses new restrictions really are needed) not to included these areas too. Can anyone understand the logic of these decisions?

To make it look like something is being done, no matter how ineffectual?

It’s not great in Brazil. But it’s even worse in Peru, the worst death rate in the world in fact, which had an early and severe lockdown. Japan on the other hand had barely any restrictions worth talking about but has escaped relatively lightly so far. This suggests that other dynamics are at play.

er, no. Not worse than Brazil. Currently 7th in the world in terms of overall deaths (you'll have to sort the columns yourself) and fewer deaths than the UK.

    and the reason?

“Peru’s response was right on time,” said Elmer Huerta, a Peruvian doctor and trusted broadcaster on public health matters for Latin American audiences. “It was the first country in Latin America to respond with a lockdown.“But the problem was people’s behaviour,” he said. “The fact that on the eighth week of confinement you have thousands of people who are positive [for Covid-19] means that those people got the virus while the country was in lockdown – which means they did not respect the law.”

A bit like what's going on in the north/north-west by all accounts......Unless, of course, lockdowns actually cause the spread of the virus, just like wearing a face covering does. Stands to reason, after all....

Er yes. Try looking again at the link you sourced. Brazil 642 per million. Peru 949 per million. So Peru, which lockdowned hard and early far worse than Brazil.

Good point! As an employer I have to say this is a total nightmare.
