12.51 miles, 3,488 feet, 3 hours 42 minutes: Fairfield c/w. Cold wind high up, but not as strong at a given height as yesterday. Overcast, no rain/snow/sleet. Terrain frozen from the valley up; frozen slush on the tops, which was lovely to run on in microspikes, sometimes next to old deep footprints - uncanny. The large deep drifts next to the wall made for a lovely descent. Saw about a dozen on the fell, about the same number on the roads in town. Lots of cars parked near Pelter Bridge.

9.16 miles, 3,734 feet, 3 hours 2 minutes: Wansfell Pike, with twice down/up the race route to the kissing gate. Initially sunny, but gradually became overcast. Terrain mostly frozen solid, but surprisingly dry; no snow on the Pike - some patches of ice where puddles and minor water flows have frozen. A bit of a cold breeze, but nothing too bothersome. Microspikes not needed. About a dozen on the fell, and a similar number on the roads.

7.69 miles, 2,956 feet, 3 hours 11 minutes: Wansfell Pike, including once down/up the race steps. Fresh wet snow overnight - about 1 inch in the town, perhaps 6 inches on average on the Pike. Very slippery underfoot, even with microspikes. Mostly unrunnable. Constant light sleet/drizzle, but not that windy, so not cold. Saw 2 others low down on the fell.

7.08 miles, 2,234 feet, 2 hours 18 minutes: Wansfell Pike. Yesterday's widespread wet snow has largely gone - what remains is anything from very wet slush to sheet ice, and it is often difficult to tell what it is until you tread on it. Microspikes invaluable on the descent. Rather windy on top, but not that cold; overcast, constant light rain/sleet. Saw no-one else on the fell, and only 2 on the roads.

3 years ago today since my dad died. Went for a nice run out in my orange shorts (now faded)

10.29 miles, 3,058 feet, 2 hours 59 minutes: Loughrigg trails. Initially overcast and drizzly, later it cleared up and there was sunshine and some blue sky. No significant wind, not cold. 99% of the snow at this level has gone - the ground is saturated and slippery and the microspikes earned their keep yet again. Saw about a dozen whilst out, only one of whom was on the fell.

MikeT do you therefore use your spikes for additional grip, even when its not icy?

Yes - the microspikes are so useful - even my new shoes - X-talon 255s - which have decent studs, are defeated by steep muddy or grassy terrain. Sometimes the microspikes just collect mush underneath them, but that is uncommon. They were excellent yesterday and today.

8.82 miles, 3,825 feet, 3 hours 8 minutes: Wansfell Pike, with twice down/up the race route to the kissing gate. Sunshine and light showers, not particularly windy nor cold. Terrain has dried out a bit, so not as slippery as it could be - microspikes not used. Quite a few on the fell and the roads.

7.34 miles, 3,717 feet, 2 hours 42 minutes: Wansfell Pike - similar to yesterday. I had planned to do Red Screes but even a small increase in height revealed a very strong cold wind, so I changed the route. Sunshine and light showers. Terrain wet but not too slippery: microspikes not used. Lots on the fell.
