6.07 miles, 2,549 feet, 1 hour 47 minutes: Wansfell Pike, including down/up/down the race descent to the kissing gate (11/21/11 minutes). Light rain throughout. Claggy down to the town, thicker higher up. Cold wind on the top. Slippery. Saw five others on the fell.
The race starts behind The Salutation Hotel, but currently finishes much higher up Stockghyll Lane, at the old Kelsick Grammar School - did it finish lower down in the past? Once off the tarmac, and through the first field, there is then the kissing gate, and almost all of the rest of the ascent is on the tourist path steps. The descent is almost all on grass; it is to the right of the steps looking down, and well away from them - it joins the ascent route just above the kissing gate. From the kissing gate to the top is a well recognised AAC training route - some can run up all the steps. The descent to the kissing gate takes me about 8 minutes when the grip is good and the bracken not too high; through the lower field and the short road section would probably add 3 minutes or so to that. The grass is of course very slippery at the moment so considerable care is needed.
12.58 miles, 3,688 feet, 3 hours 32 minutes: Fairfield clockwise. In clag from Nab scar to High Pike. Very strong head wind for the first half of the descent. No rain, not cold, but I had full waterproofs on. Very slippery. Did not see a soul on the fell.
12.32 miles, 3,294 feet, 3 hours 15 minutes: Fairfield c/w. What a contrast to yesterday - sunshine, the odd cloud/patch of fog, no significant wind, waterproof top not used. Still slippery. About a dozen on the fell.
7.08 miles, 2,838 feet, 2 hours 15 minutes: Wansfell Pike - including down/up/down the race route descent; that adds 45 minutes in total. Very similar to yesterday: mainly sunny, the odd cloud, no rain, cool breeze at times, waterproof top not used. Still slippery, but a bit drier than it was. Saw about a dozen on the fell. Not many cars about.
7.5 miles, 833 feet, 75 minutes: Skelwith Fold/Bridge - Drunken Duck loop. Very overcast, no sun, no rain, no wind at this level. Quite a few delivery vans about, only saw about 10 people.
7.44 miles, 3,560 feet, 2 hours 33 minutes: Wansfell Pike, including down/up/down/up/down the race descent. Lots on the fell. Sunshine and clouds, excellent visibility, no rain nor wind, terrain drying up somewhat.
Three and a half thousand feet is a good amount to pack into 7.5 miles!
Weather is shocking here today. I pulled out 4800ft in 10 miles, so a similar ratio on paper, but obviously that was all treadmill work, and none of the descent to go with it!
