It’s not the concept of coaches I’m perplexed by. It’s the idea of paying so much money for information which can be had for free via clubs or a the price of a book. I guess it’s about time and wanting the information straight away

...so would anyone recommend any books on training for the fells or running in general for people post 40yrs?
I have Dennis Quinlan's book fell and hill running that is ok.
There also seems to be hundreds of books... I have never used any structure whatsoever and have only got fitter by doing races in a yo yo pattern of race race race, injury... unfit. Race race, injury... Beer, fat/unfit, etc, etc.. much harder to claw back any fitness nowadays at 46yrs and I think a plan would be beneficial to me. The bike is an alternative.

I'm 61 and still in your "Yo Yo Pattern" Sasquatch.

Wish I had got some structure to my training years ago but probably a bit late now!

I believe I have a decent training structure... although my coach tells me (and to be honest I know myself anyway!) that I race far too much...

I could no doubt improve my performance by racing less, training harder, and resting more... But as someone who is never going to challenge for honours, dropping 90% of my races just doesn't seem worth it.

Not to say that i'm not fiercely competitive... i'd hoped that somehow, somewhere, this year, I might pick up a top 3 position in a smaller race... but not really prepared to sacrifice perhaps 20 races (and fantastic days out) each year in pursuit of it.

I've been working weekends, early mornings, all-sorts, nothing else to do apart from work and train... so I think i'm a few hours in hand with work!!!

I have also followed the Sasquatch unstructured pattern, except that now it's not so much "race race race injury" as "injury injury injury race".
