    Sedburgh vs marathon

Just for a bit of fun, here is a proposed equality, that sedburgh time in reasonable conditions is similar to marathon time.

I’ll enter the running by saying In a year I did mid 2.50 on marathon, I just beat 2.50 on sedburgh. I forget the exact times.

Many years later I plodded a marathon in around 3.30 I recollect just beating 3.30 at sedbergh

    Who else has comparison times?

I did Sedbergh Hills in 2018 in 3:11.... the day after doing Weasdale Horseshoe, and in absolutely zero visibility. So i'd like to think i could get under 3hrs on fresh legs and decent weather. 3hrs would also be my target marathon time, although i've never done one.

I'm sure i've heard a similar comparison for Stretton Skyline and marathon time... think i'm around 3:09 on that one although again aiming closer to 3:00 next time.

My marathon PB as a V40 is 2.55
Ten years later as a V50 I did Sedbergh in 2.59
Twenty years later as a V60 I did Sedbergh in 3.01

Although I had run it 20 minutes faster I was quite pleased with the 3.01 because it secured the English Champs Bronze Medal.

    Interesting.
Sorry for being thick. I don’t get where the 20 minutes is?
    Do you mean 3.21?

I did Sedbergh six times, and I have just had a look in my results archive. I should first mention that all six occasions were during the period that I was strongest; I don't remember difficult weather conditions on any of them; and steep, grassy hills are what I tend to perform best on.

Anyway, my six times at Sedbergh range from 2:21:19 to 2:27:16. The idea that I could ever have run a road marathon in under 2:30 is laughable. The nearest I came to doing a road marathon was the Cambridge Boundary run, which in those days was 25 miles, including some road, track, footpath, ploughed field, even hills (don't laugh: the route went over 200 feet above sea level on the Gog Magog Hills): I did 2:54, although that was a bit before my strongest period.

Only slowing down by 2 minutes in ten years! What's your secret of eternal youth?

I meant my PB for Sedbergh was 2.42 but I was delighted with the 3.01 because in a Champ counter I came in after Kieran Carr and Dave Spedding (then both V60) who have won more Champ. Gold Medals than you can shake a stick at.

Aren't you a mathematician? So a sophisticated analytical system?

I have the full results for every fell race I have run.

I also have in race date order my time, position, winning time,% of winning time,% of finish field, vet cat position...and more - but I did race a lot!
