    LONGNOR... where were you!

Well.... were the flippin hec' were you??

Longnor Races worked it's own kind of amazing magic again... this eve
Down in the limped water meadows of the gentle Manifold...
A hidden race, a special place.....????
Men & women in full kit.... helmeted, booted & metalled…
Razzing around the grass track.... on very very powerful motorbikes....
The air full of 2 stroke fumes.... flying turf & shredded grass on the wind..
In your eye & ear… shrieks & so much more..
Some flew so high they had to fetch a Red Helicopter..
Hopefully those on that special ride are alive & safe……?

We humbled runners... were afforded a spot...
In this most mysterious of events & places..
Cut short by 1 lap, due to Red H' landings...
We did our bit.... ran half the circuit....
Ran so fast the single lap... of field & thistle, grid... gate... stile...
With bramble, nettle in plentiful mode, crossed the river, but once...

And were rewarded with a clapping host, drunk on the Longnor Day....
With Buxton & Longnor Kids marvellously stealing the whole show!
Be there next year.... would be a great pity if you missed the magic!

    PS
    1st Simon Bailey
    2nd Andy Wilton...
    ?nd Gus French (close by!)

Sorry, Lassies names escape at this moment...
    PPS
Lantern Pike... coming very soon... 15th Sept 2007 (RICKY'S RECORD!!)
    PPPS
Daz_H... this name has your name on it!

It's bloody amazing just what you can string together after a few pints!!

But, Andrew, when you read it back in the sobering light of a cold dawn ... doesn't it ever worry you?

I've found red wine for breakfast is a good worry tonic too!!!
(Point taken Rudi, it's often rather , if & when I remember, and dare to look; if it raises the odd gentle smile maybe it's worth it)...

Back to the Red Wine now & memories of another gem of an eve, had last night at Great Longstone, Lord Roy's two handed grip on the starting pistol took the biscuit!!!!! (or is it me?!)..

A secret race. How intriguing. Who or what do you have to know to get in on races like this? Are there any others coming up?

    Re: LONGNOR... where were you!

THIS THURSDAY – 9th SEPTEMBER – LOGNOR RACES – JUST DO IT!

It’s mad mad mad, never to be forgotten, and that’s just the Grass Track Races which precede the “fell race”….promise you won’t be disappointed…

Details are never that easy to come by, but it is a race that is often one by international runners, running side by side (well at the start anyway) with club & “fun” runners of all ages & abilities….it’s a gem.

Buxton AC have a very brief note on their website…
The start time is around 18:30, but will depend on the horse and motorbike races that precede the running races. There is a junior race over 2 miles (one lap) and senior race over 4 miles (two laps). Please note that the Longnor race involves a stream crossing - wet feet are inevitable!

    Re: LONGNOR... where were you!

Ran this 3 or 4 times in the 1999's - interesting in muddy weather as you have to run round the grasstrack at the start and finish - and as hundreds of bikes have been racing round this track earlier in the day you can imagine the state of it! Always a crackpot occasion. Usually a fierce contest between Wilton and Bailey. I may be wrong but I'm sure Longnor Races has been going for over 100 years!?

    Re: LONGNOR... where were you!

I did this one yesterday for the first time. Very enjoyable. I like the idea of having a course that comes through the event field half way through the race, as people can see how the race is developing (if anyone was interested).

Jason Burgess of Staffs moorland won it by a street, from me, Gareth Briggs and (winner of the Totley Exterminator) Mick Stenton.
