Got my first proper view of a Red Kite this weekend (well the first one I could positively identify).
Magnificent!

We have Harewood House to thank for the increase in numbers in the Wharfe Valley.

Brilliantly coloured male redstart with his missus, chirping (at me probably) on a dry stone wall at Crosby Garrett fells yesterday. First I've seen in a couple of years and never a mixed pair together. Wonderful.

A shout out for golden plover; a real moorland special and surprisingly confiding at times

I probably see a lot of these. For me I suspect they are in the category of "small wader-shaped birds that zig-zag away quickly before I can see their markings".
They sound more like snipe. Golden plover is medium size; maybe slightly bigger than redshank. They’re moorland specialists but not on the lowest or highest slopes. The plateau above Hag Dyke on Gt Whernside is prime territory along with a fair bit of Kinder and Bleaklow. Listen out for a plaintive single note call; kind of sad and almost pathetic

Dipper and Ring Ouzel in Red Brook on the way up to the western edge of Kinder on Saturday. Not much water in the brook for the Dipper, but there's probably a bit more now!
strafed by a few paragliders on the Cleveland hills the other week. Very impressive. Does that count?

I see merlin occasionally, and very very very rarely hen harriers when out running. Love seeing the short-eared owls too, and red kites, but my favourite is the much more common buzzard. We never saw them up in Bronteland until about 15 years ago so it's great we have them in abundance now. We had a pair that nested opposite the house for 3 years until they 'disappeared' one night. Always nice ice to see ring ousels up on the moor above Stanbury too.
