I'd second the Roclite 300 shout. Best all-rounder I've used, I think. I run a fair bit in the Dales and never bother with proper fells shoes.

I land on the outside of my forefoot and roll through the heel kiss before taking off on the opposite side, the big toe in other words. As I understand it this is how anyone who has never worn shoes will run to absorb as much shock as possible, so that is what I modelled my new style on.

I think you're plenty fast enough as you are anyway. If you're clutching at straws just fill your shed with GM beetroots.

Slipped on lingmell during the scafell race in roclites one time. Never again.

Running mainly in the Hows or Pennines, with a trip or two a month to the north or east Lakes, I find inov-8 X-Talons such as their 230 version great. Sound grip on the softer stuff and much better on any harder gravel, rocky tracks than my mudclaws. If I know there are going to be longer sections of roads, or if I'm fell walking I go for roclites. Always buy at a discount so usually last year's models with at least £30 knocked off. Sites such as Pete Bland's, Startfitness, Sportshoes, etc.

The first thing I look for on a walking boot is a nice big step between the heel and the sole - these only have a tiny step, so grip would worry me.

It's incredibly rare that i go out now intending to only walk and not run at all... i think once this year when i was walking with friends...

I just assumed everyone still wore their fell shoes... i certainly did/do...

I bought a pair of these inov-8s a few months ago. They were on offer.

They're light, and trainer like, so that's good, but it's a shame inov-8 don't do a none gortex version anymore, as these can get too warm in the summer. Waterproofing is already dodgy. However, grip on rock seems pretty good and no signs of wear on soles or uppers, and they've had a fair bit of use including a few multi-day backpacking trips.

I have no probs with the Roclite 315 on the lakeland fells, and @ this price they could be worth a punt :-

At the worst they will make cheap dog walking shoe (but imo they are good)
