It looks like Tom Adams might be stealing the show again. Mike Fanning and Daleside are there too, it'll be quite a reunion. I remember walking into Mike's living room in Stair and being dazzled by all the silverware!

And a new adventure at that! Plenty of opportunity to overtake now though (if that's your forte)!

    Good evening everyone.

Just to let you know that confirmation emails & the race instructions have been sent out to all those that have entered the West Nab race this Saturday.

Please check your emails to make sure you have received this, then read the instructions & confirm you have understood them using the link that's in the email.

Obviously, this year's race will be somewhat different to usual and our priority is the safety of competitors and officials, so please ensure you follow the current guidelines with regards to social distancing, mask wearing etc.

We are looking forward to seeing you all there.

That was quite a testing course, i lost quite a few places on that last nasty climb, it killed me a bit. Owen Beilby was off very fast indeed. It was nice to see Mike Fanning and Daleside again, who now live nearby, and hello to the man who addressed me as mr brightside on the way down West Nab.

Too true Mr Brightside, that last climb was tough although I managed to pick up 4 or 5 places, but having said that I wasn't at the sharp end like you probably were. That lane seemed to go on forever at the end.

I really enjoyed racing again but found it a bit odd in that I wasn't quite sure of my position and who I was racing due to the setting off in waves.
No idea of my position but got around in 50.45 which I was happy with.

Had a chat to Anthony Kay at the end. Nice to meet you Anthony. Hope you had a nice warm down on your bike on the way to the railway station and got home safely.

Many thanks to Hobbsy and all his helpers from Holmfirth Harriers: organising this must have been a huge task, as evidenced by the three pages of instructions that were issued to all entrants before the race.

It was great to be racing again, 20 months since my last race. I hadn't realised how much I missed the social side of fell-racing, chatting to people I had never met before but knowing that we have at least the one thing in common. Good to meet you Llani Boy,

and yes, that was me. I also had a brief chat to the legendary Antonio Cardinale before the start, and gave him a shout as I passed him (he was in the first wave, I was in the second), and when I saw him on his way up as I was coming down.

Like Llani, I enjoyed that last steep climb (but didn't enjoy having to get my legs back into running mode for the track down to the finish). Long steady climbs like the initial run up to West Nab used to be my greatest strength, but these days I seem to do best on really steep stuff where no-one is running.

More than 40 years after my first fell race, I have eventually discovered an advantage of having a bit of road in a fell race: you can look at the view without fear of falling over. That view from Wessenden Head Road was great.

That cycle ride back to Honley station was very slow. Rather than taking the direct road, up the 16% hill out of Meltham, I used a route on the B6108 and little lanes in the valley to the north; except that the little lanes didn’t stay in the valley, and I ended up walking up two of the hills. However, by train to Honley is a good way to travel to this race: as you step out of Honley station there is a grand view to the west, with the skyline dominated by West Nab.

Thanks Hobbsy and your helpers for putting on the race. Very well organised and no doubt a lot of extra work with current restrictions. It is appreciated. It was great to see so many happy faces and numbers on chests again.

The only downside for me was that with all those youngsters flying around it made me feel every one of my 62 years!

Don't worry yourself, Llani Boy. You flying past me on the Half Tour of Bradwell the previous week made me feel every one of my 57 years!

An interesting feature of the junior results: the youngest age group with more male than female runners is U15. https://events360.co.uk/WestNabFellR...ults2021_4.pdf

So if girls are outnumbering boys in the younger age groups, why not among the older groups and seniors? I remember (a long time ago) someone talking about the decline in numbers of females doing orienteering in their late teens: the suggestion was that at that age they become more concerned with their appearance, and don't want scratches all over their legs.
