    Crag Fell Handicap race

Next race in the Cumberland Fell Runners world is the Crag Fell Handicap Race on Saturday the 11th of December.

Historically, this is a run we have before the AGM. We run the race, quick prizegiving and off to the pub for chips, sandwiches, beer and the AGM.

Please note, preferably before the race, that it is "Pre entry". This is so that I can produce better start lists and reduce the chance of errors with tracking who has started, and finished.

Entry is free - but you are asked to "bring a prize to win a prize". In the past there has been a variety of prizes from Alcohol, cakes, freshly baked bread, socks, chocolates.

There will also be a collection for Mountain Rescue.

Full details are on the website https://c-f-r.org.uk/pages/race_crag_fell.html

The day did not start well when I realised I had forgotten to bring my insoles up to Brough where I was staying, so I had to fashion some out of old cardboard boxes and some awful foam insoles from a pair of trainers. They were rubbish and bunched up in the toe of my walshes on the way down. I handed over my prize offering at registration, it consisted of 1off 2.5mm hss-Co drill bit and 1off 3mm hss-Co Ti-N drill bit. Very useful to the right person. I noticed Dave Lund of Ambleside fame was 2mins behind me, it was looking like a tough run. I was just about hanging onto dave lunds coat tails as the run off began, but I dithered about ditching the path for open fell as the crow flies and he gapped me. The path was rubbish and there was a lot of traffic, dave lund somehow managed to defy it all and vanished. I put the guy in front of me under some pressure as the path narrowed and he stepped on the gas a bit, then rolled his ankle!

All your overtaking needs to be done before the streams really, the middle and lower reaches of the path are too narrow and you're relying on mistakes and the goodwill of the very slow ones. I came 19th, but could have been top 10 if I'd have hung onto dave lund of Ambleside fame.
