Very sad to hear that Joss passed away today.
The word legend was made for someone like him. I'm sure he will looking down on his beloved fells watching us silly buggers running around them!

I never met him, and I'm fairly sure I only raced against him once (Duddon 1983), but I learned very soon after I started fell running that Joss was the super-hero of the sport. Nine successive Ennerdale wins, 72 peaks in 24 hours, and all the rest . . .
In his lifetime he suffered from unreality, as do so many Englishmen.

All good things must come to an end but to lose someone like Joss is, well, indescribable. Much love and sympathy to all his family and friends. And thank you, dear Joss, for being a shining beacon of simple humanity and example of greatness to us all.
The passing of an era, a sad day but he will always be remembered so long as there are runners on the fells. Best wishes to all his family.
The end is nigh
Joss's passing was noted in the BBC Radio 4 news today. Usually when someone's death is announced on the Radio 4 news, it is an actor or a musician who I have never heard of; so it was good to hear them mention someone truly great today.

It was also on main BBC 1 news. Joss was truly a figure of national importance.
When I helped out over Fairfield and the Dodds, and again on the last day, on his 1986 Wainwright epic, I don't think I realised just how big an achievement his week was at the time. At Clough Head Colin Dulson and myself had been working out the best line down to get High Rigg...."Now then lads, what's the craic?", we told him..."follow me, I did this in the '64 trial". He shot off to the west, we looked at each other before sprinting to catch him where he leapt off the edge onto a faint sheep trod that led perfectly onto the path and on towards High Rigg. Wonderful!
