I run the FireStick through an Ethernet cable.
Think most can be run via cable, which is more reliable.

For the record: we'll be sitting 3.5m from it.
Is it reasonable to expect it'll last 15-20yr like the good old cathode ones?
Does it become obsolete like pc and smartphone where manufacturers on purpose force you cheekily to upgrade hardware because otherwise no longer compatible with blabla stuff you neither need nor want but they still force you to have...?
    I would suggest a 49" then.
It is unlikely to last so long. Maybe look for one with a long warranty with it. The price of a repair these days compared to a new TV means TV's rarely get replaced. It's also true that technology moves so quick that you will probably need to upgrade every 10 years even if your TV is still working.

This is your entry level and as you can see it's a "Smart" TV which indicates use with wifi. Mine connects through USB from a Devolo system, because my router has to go in the opposite corner of the house. Devolo sends broadband through your electric system.

My main beef is much as with other tech, the bloatware. You can't really get one anymore that you can just switch on, pick a channel and watch.

Just 'upgraded' from a 20" 15 year old Sony. It mighthave been small but the eye exercise workout every day meant that neither of us wears glasses yet ( ).

We went for a whopping great 32" smartipants TV. Samsung The Frame. £345

5 years warranty free (knocked the likes of Curry's out the park on warranty and price), plus a mere £40 for 5 years accidental damage cover, if your accident prone, or have crazy collies in your home.

Easy to set up. Worked with our 10 year old aerial and hooked up to the wi-fi no hassles.

You can stick it on the wall to make it look like a framed painting if you want (ours stands on a cupboard on its legs though). There's a photo 'conversion' setting, that cleverly changes your photos into paintings allowing you to choose various painting/arty styles. Sounds cheesy, but I have been impressed. The next size up (43" is 4K, if that floats yer boat).

OK we finally bought one, last night, online, HomeX UA50FT5505 Fire TV, 50", at 350€ the least expensive 50".
I look forward to have it delivered and set it up and watch films or sport with the family.

    Why did we buy it?
In fact: 1) I don't even like films, nor series, only news or docu, but that's just me in our family, and 2) I'm very torn from paying for watching pro sport. But wanted something, anything, that could facilitate gathering the family together. Hope it will help on this direction.
When I was a child, from the parents point of view TVs were big evils, children watched TV and ignore everything else. But now we are in smartphone times (tough our child has a 2hr/day limit).
We want something that makes us spending time together, maybe facilitate small talks. No need for doing great things like climbing mountains or writing books, even crappy stuff like watching junk films better than each on its own facebook tiktok instagram strava without speaking to each other.

50" - wow - we have a 32", which we thought was huge after our 24" cathode ray job. A friend had a 55" - I got a degree of motion sickness watching sport on it - but then I have a tendency to motion sickness for example on ride simulators - I was almost sick at Disneyland Paris years ago - took me an hour or so to recover.
