    Re: cyclocross ?

The only reason I have any qualification to answer this thread is that I have a cyclocross bike which I bought when I had a chance of getting a second hand one. I've been riding it just as a road bike and I love it. I fancied doing some cyclocross in the autumn and winter but that getting on and off looks a bit difficult. I don't know anything about technical stuff.

Frames have wider clearances than road bikes so they don't get clogged up with mud. That's about as much as I know!

I've always wanted a Kona 'Jake the Snake' !

A cyclocross bike is similar to a road bike but with a stronger frame, slightly different frame geometry, larger clearances (distance between wheels and frame) to prevent mud clogging everything up and wider spread of gears. As well as obviously being suitable for cyclocross they make excellent all round bikes but will not be quite as fast as a true road bike. Some more info here.

Lots of differences I think - better clearance for mud around the brakes and the frame (racers will catch mud between the frame & brakes easilt), lower gear ratios for the hills, lower top tube so you don't end up with very watery eyes I think the geometry may be different - i.e. more upright/smaller frame sizes.

I don't have a cyclo cross bike - but I had a racer until a few weeks ago - I guess there may be other differences. I think cyclo cross is rather on/off constantly - hence running & carrying the bike a lot.

Nearly got a Kona Jake the Snake a few years ago, but ended up with a cheaper racer instead.

There's some light hybrids out there nowadays - flat bars, skinny tyres.

My dining rooms already got 2 bikes in it - I don't think a third would fit unless I took the table out!

Typical - I spend too long typing & everyone else gets in there first!!!

Best run away now.. no space for a 3rd bike... only just got rid of the racer after the frame cracked

Konas are fab though - I've had 2
