Potential cheating ? What to do ?

Was in a race t other day, a mid pack runner takes 5 mins to reach finish from the last check point ( overall winner takes 11 mins) and takes a age group win ! Precisely ‘winning back’ the time between the 2nd place age group finisher and an obvious short cut missing out one mile of the race. Thoughts ? Protocol ? Cheers

Presumably you have taken this up with the Race Organiser? Any response?

But was it a prescribed route to the finish. With respect ROs don't always make it clear. I've known flagged sections that are 'recommended' 'compulsory' or 'actually just there for the junior races'
Sometimes it isn't obvious if it's acceptable to take a racing line or to follow a path, particularly when crossing a valley or dropping in to the closing stages. Rather than cheating perhaps it's a different interpretation or understanding of what was expected on that particular race?

Mark is correct...was there a prescribed route between check points or was it open to choice?

Yes, need to find out whether it's contravening race route and then take it up with RO.

I've done a couple of Shropshire fell races where there is a prescribed route but it's not mandatory.

Yep. Obviously the RO should be told "for information".

It brings to mind an infamous English Champs race where a blatant short cut was taken right at the end by two runners to win and come second despite the RO having made it abundantly clear on the start line before the "off" that an area was out of bonds. After a complaint was made the RO "didn't want to know" (I was there) and it went to the FRA Committee to resolve because of the champ. points issue.

Even with flags the precise status of the flags on "flagged routes" is rarely accurately specified.

I don't think we pay ROs well enough.
