It is a very short and fast race, I make it nearer 2.5 miles / 600'. It's essentially a fast run over fields followed by a steep, calf-straining climb through short straggly bracken most of the way up a hill, then before you can get your breath back, it's a fast descent back down via grassy track, a little more bracken and fields.
I've put a sketch map of the route as I remember it from 2005 on the Northumberland Fell Runners website: go to what's on>local races>scroll down to Alwinton show>route. Also a few (not very good) photos from the start and finish that year - in the photos section.
Thanks Topofahill,
I did the Windy Gyle fell race in 2006, I enjoyed it and saw this one advertised on the board in the village when I was walking the other day, might give it a try. Funny the only thing I remember about the Windy Gyle is the burning leg muscles and bursting lungs![]()
thanks for the info.
We raced at Windy Gyle together then ... great route!
Funnily enough, bursting lungs is about all I can remember from Alwinton Show ... oh, and a terrific stitch!
Alwinton Show Race could do with being a bit longer, but I suppose it's good for sharpening up your speed. I seem to remember that most of the elevated part of the route is visible from the showground, especially through binoculars, which I guess, is the reason for choosing it, so it's good for spectators. It's the same route for the junior races too, I think.
That hill is the one you can see when you drive into Alwinton, looks a bit steep. Not very fast or fit at the moment so I will give it my best uphill and enjoy the downhill, I walked the Alwinton round back in june and saw the fell runners about a third of the way round, I think that one is on my calendar for next year. Every time I see a fell runner on the hills they make it look so easy, must start training hard over the winter and get some decent mileage in and enjoy the coming year.
Oh, it's not that steep - it's just like climbing a staircase ... in a hurry ... and there's no handrail ... and it goes on a bit!
I didn't know that fellrunners entered the Alwinton Round - I thought it was just walking challenges (unlike the Allendale Challenge). I may have a look into it next year.
Topofahill the alwinton round, and the alwinton fell race were on the same day. The short walk I think follows the same 14 mile course as the fell race, not sure if it is the same day every year or just a one off this year.
