    Talking Great Manchester Rip Off

    Struggling to lose weight after xmas.
    Trying to get into a pair of old jeans.
    Searching for more value than a Arsenal season ticket.

    Then why not lose 28 pounds in minutes and enter the great manchester run.

    Entries now being taken online.

    My entry is in. (you have to do something with all that money you save from doing xc's and fell races- so why not enter and contribute to Brendan's Pension Fund the BBC will have to get rid of him this year)

    28 bleedin squid for a 10K!! Would like to know how they jusfity this cost and also, if it was £20 last year then why the 40% price rise?

    A lot of the people who make up the numbers in these type of races dont do any other races during the year. All they seem to focus on is the big mass entry races. It escapes me - most of the smaller races are much more friendly and still have a great atmosphere. And you dont get boxed in at the start by some dick in a teletubby outfit

    Well thats the power of BUPA marketing for you.

    It sickens me when big enterprises jump on 'getting fit' people. By this I mean those who only want to enter a big race to be anonomous and not come last! So many smaller events are dying out as a result, because councils see the pulling power of these super-events and think they can hike up the price for the small ones as well! (IMHO)

    Don't get me started on this one. I had a discussion with some people at work about this, all they could say is it's not for the serious athlete, it's for people who want the achievement of running 10k and to raise money for charity. My arse I replied it's a f%$£&*^g rip off, you can raise money for charity doing any number of events. If they want you to raise money for chariyt why don't they just give you a spnosor form charge you a tenner and get you to raise another £20 in sponsorship. It's a money making exercise, just like the race for life, which the mrs did last year £15 to enter and then you have to raise a load of money in sponsorship. What a load of shit.

    Never stopped at the hotel for this race. Might do this year looking at how much the big man must be making.

    Re: Great Manchester Rip Off

    And from what I read and interpret.....this is just the sort of mass participation event that UKA would like us all to be taking part in in the future (all those smaller, cheaper, more friendly races having been driven out by increasing regulations and affiliation fees!!).

    Now let me see, how shall I use my hard-earned money;

    i) £28 for a crowded road 10k in the centre of Manchester, working out at nearly £5 per mile
    ii) £4 for a 11.5mile, 5000ft race around the Shropshire hills in a couple fo week time, working out at around 35p per mile
