    Windermere Marathon 2008

Couldn't help notice before the Snowdonia Marathon at the weekend leaflets promoting the Windermere Marathon in 2008 and the price £32. Thought that is a bit steep for a road race considering the runners who did the Snowdonia race paid something in the region of £17 if I am not mistaken.

This race does seems very expensive to me and a bit of a rip off?

Would imagine the pricing for this will put some people off?

Yeah, what is all that about - £32!!! It's not just a Lake District Tax because other events are getting silly too.

    Tut...

Totally agree Pinno , complete and utter rip off. I don't enter these overpriced events, they're just taking the p*ss. Long live the LDWA and FRA with reasonable pricing.

Totally overpriced! Shame that, with prices that high, they won't make much profit if nobody enters!

West Highland Way race is now £75!

In NZ paying $100 for a race (£40) wasn't unusual. Companies were set up specifically to organise mountain races, a full time business.

Indeed a huge sum for what is a provincial event.
I wonder if they lost money this year and are trying to make up for that?
They certainly spent a lot of money this year, for instance they had hundreds of metres of temporary metal road surface laid out across the fields for cars to access the parking areas. As it was hot sunny weather they were surplus to requirements but even if it was tipping it down people would've mucked in and pushed and towed etc etc. it must've cost ££££££s.

Thats not to say I have any criticism of the event/organisation in any way. the '07 event was superb in every respect.

I wont be entering "08 for various reasons, including the fee to a minor extent. However although we may feel it to be excessive, £32 is bugger all money for anyone after a day out in the lakes and I'm sure it will reach the limit well in advance of the closing date.

This year I don't have an automatic place in London, just went through the lottery and waiting for the result. Windermere has been in the back of my mind for some time ...

Then, what are good road marathon at that time of the year ?

Theres the white peak mara the day before. Along the tissington and high peak trails. Starts at dovedale and ends at cromford. Think its £ 15.

Nowt wrong with £32 for a marathon. I've just paid £9.50 to enter a 5 mile road race - now that's what I call expensive. There isn't even a water station!

The race is supposed to raise money for Brathay Hall, which is a pretty worthwhile project. It was well organised and a lovely day to boot last year.
