    Cyclo Cross

Me and Chris decided to try something different yesterday...
Really hard work, on a wodland course with a fair bit of getting off and running. Fantastic workout, and great fun. I'd deffo recommend it...

We're here (struggling somewhat) on the bottom row...

Correct me for being a dunce, but surley it wasn't a proper cyclocross race, as in the pics there are some on mountain bikes?

As far as I can work out, most Cyclo cross events don't preclude MTB's, except in the 3 Peaks where they only allow cyclo cross machines*, because they claim that the fatter tires would cause an erosion issue. Dick Ballantine (a fell runner with Keighley and Craven AC) rode on Sunday on a cross bike. He does MTB races all year long at a good standard and said after the race that he'd wished he'd brought his mountain bike along instead, so it must be horses for courses.

Quite a few MTB's there on Sunday as you say, as at the Harriers v Cyclists race last year. If you click around on the TAimages site there are photo galleries from that one too.

As I said, I'd definately recommend this sport for a workout like you've never experienced.
I found that when it was easier to run than ride, I had an advantage because the pure cyclists either couldn't run or didn't like having to !!

You are right on your limit of oxygen debt for 45 mins, - I was jiggered afterwards but I felt great when I'd totally recovered a couple of days later.
One of these each week or so and i'll have a superb winter's training.

*A cyclo cross bike is essentially like a road bike, but with knobbly tyres for grip, lower gears (39/28) and maybe a bit more clearance around the brakes and frame to cope with any mud.

Thanks for the link Stagger. We are doing one at "Greetland all Rounders" on Sunday. Game on ??

That answers it as I base my (severley limited) knowledge on this race, being the only one I investigated on the cyclocross circuit.
