Earlier in the year I was thinking of doing the trollers trot (but in the end it clashed with something else). That route though incredibly goes parallel to Simon's Seat, down in the valley (wash my mouth out), rather than going only slightly off at a tangent to visit the trig. Forget short cuts, had I run the trot I'd have felt obligated to hack up Simon's Seat because not to do so feels like sacrilage to me. What were/are the organisers they thinking of ffs
I agree Stolly. I've had 2 memorable runs up Simon's Seat this summer. Starting at Buffers, obviously ! When I did the Trollers Trot, earlier this year, John Sparshatt (the organiser) said that it was the last one, as he couldn't find anybody else to take over from him. Does anybody know if that has now happened. It would be a real shame.
Yes, it's gone. It was a good day out, even without Simon's Seat. I sometimes go up that way from Thruscross.
The view from Simon's Seat is fabulous and the climb from Howgill is relatively steep for Wharfedale. I ought to go up more often
I keep meaning to run up to Simons seat but haven't got round to it as I'm not 100% on the route and haven't had time to recce it first. I've been up there before but not since I was a kid
The route up there is a doddle - I tend to run along the river from Bolton Abbey or the Devonshire Arms and then hack up from beyond the Howgill campsite (along the lane until the gate on the right before the second farm) to the trig and then take the diagonal over the tops back, via the valley of desolation. See this route here
This is the route I use, but starting from Buffers (Storiths).

In fact, I'm walking it for a change with the missus tomorrow.
