    Langdale Horseshoe 28th Dec

A couple of us (so far) are doing the Langdale Horseshoe On Friday the 28th December starting at 18:00.

Any Owls/Bats or other nocturnal species that wants to come along are welcome.

The only proviso is that we need to make it back in time to rehydrate in the ODG

Send me a PM if your interested.

Start is at 18:00 at grid reference 285 060 (the langdale start between the main road and the junction that leads to the Old Dungeon Ghyll)

No matter what the weather I'll be there (unless can't get down the valley due to snow ) we'll see what its like on the night, looks like its going to be windy so wrap up well

Then drinks afterwards, sorry no clubs or curries on this one

I tried my damnedest to get tomorrow off work to join you on this but, with no holiday left, I failed miserably. I work in Leeds so coming over after work would probably mean leaving just after lunch - a tad difficult. Have a good run though.

How cold? At 750m: 5 or 6C but will feel as cold as minus 10C directly in the wind

Good little chart for windchill factoring.

Well it was a bit wet but three of us set off for a look.

After a slow start we eventually found the path onto the fellside and sploshed our way up to Stickle tarn, the amount of water coming down Stickle Ghyll was deafening and at least one of us did not get across with dry feet.

At the tarn we passed some strange people out with headtorches then up round the back of Pavey Ark, up untill now we'd been sheltered from the wind but we turned towards Thundercar into a headwind and the cloud came down as the rain got heavier so out came the compass, went over the north top of Thundacar Knott only one place to go in these conditions, down.

Got on the path to stake pass but on Martcrag moor where it got fainter lost it due to being unable to look forward into the gale, so back to the compass, after a few falls into bogs, including one that went well above the knee and elbows? (my gloves are waterproof the water stayed in them all the way back to the ODG) the rocks on the west side of the moor appeared from there it was a quick descent to pick up the path from stake ghyll and then down the zig zags to Langdale and a well earned pint or two

Looks like my lily-livered cowardice in not coming was a wise move

It was bad enough up on Pendle today in that wind and rain IN DAYLIGHT!

We need some more of those cold, still, starry nights for these runs Bill

Respect for even STARTING the run!
