    Abbreviations for races

For Lambs longer leg there are the abbreviations

'NS' and 'PM' meaning navigational skills are required and the course is partially marked.

So if it is partially marked how much navigation do you need to do? Do you have to run with a map in front of you or is it all fairly obvious?

I would say very obvious in a 3 mile run Novice.
I don't think you will have any navigational problems.

    All the best.

The most navigation I've had to do is keep my eyes open and follow the people in front. It isn't a long race, but it helps to know roughly where the route goes if the clag's down.

    Re: Abbreviations for races

even in a short race in good weather there is the potential for straying off the course (I know all about this now, cos I did it at the Gravy Pud just recently! )

    for "Navigational Skills" I read:
study a map of the course BEFORE you set off - ideally the night before, but deffo at registration
that way you will know that the course FOR EXAMPLE:
sets off on a farm track for half a mile before
going under some pylons then branching off left after the next farm on the right
before slogging up the big hill
before following the ridge for 1M
before dropping down left just after you enter some woods
before crossing the river about quarter of a mile short of the reservoir...
etc... etc... (you get the idea)

having a good memory/sense of direction helps with the above!

this way, if you reach an un-marshalled fork in the path, you should have a good idea which way to go

N.B. the above directions are fictitious and bear NO RESEMBLANCE WHATSOEVER to the course of Lamb's Longer Leg!

When you start the last climb you may have to have a close look at the route by going on your hands and feet to navigate. Steep!

I also managed to stray off course at Gravy Pud, my excuse was due to blindly following a couple of guys in front. I can't however use this as an excuse for the time it took me to complete!
