Flower Scar is a great little race
Easily comparable to thievely Pike yet not recognised for a championship race!

Surely, part of the appeal of fell running is that there are these lovely quiet little backwaters where you can go and still have a good competitive blast whilst avoiding the melee of an oversubscribed, possibly 'overrated' championship race. Why spoil this phenomena by advertising such races here. It is surely up to each individual to trawl through the FRA calendar and search out 'new' events for him / her self. In September 2005, when all fell races had officially been 'cancelled' in deference to the World Masters' event at Keswick, we still ran our local agricultural society fell race, because:-
1. We wanted to keep faith with the local agricultural society.
2. Many of the regular competitors expressed dismay at the prospect of no race
We still had 80 or so entrants, as per usual. We would not really want it to get much bigger than that. Hence, I'm not naming the race; but it is in the calendar!
Sorry
did I say Flower Scar was a cracking little race?
what I meant was "crappy", please, please don't turn up at this race you won't enjoy it at all, the descent is rubbish and I'd rather run the whole race on my own. In fact given that I'll be running you wouldn't want to be in this race anyway, I'm crappy too!
3 Peaks Race 2008 that's the one you should all do, much underrated.
Now you're talking my language BogHobbit!!
As Ian has already mentioned, many of the Welsh races struggle to find numbers of runners, and they are some stonking good runs. Tend to be centered in either Snowdonia (organised by eryri) or in Beacons/Black mountains. A few races have started in mid-wales area and seem to be attracting reasonable fields - but nothing like the numbers that visit lakes etc.
So come to Wales for good races and smaller fields
Don't roll with a pig in poo. You get covered in poo and the pig likes it.
Macclesfield Forest 5
technically not a fell race (too much forestry access road and well-made tracks/paths) but a LOVELY varied route (1200ft ascent in 5.5M)
no prizes - entry is by voluntary donation to a nominated charity
run in July - details usually go up on Macc Harriers website a couple of months in advance
only 57 runners in 2007 - could cope with a few more
oh, and I agree about Welsh races - I did Arenig Fawr in September and was AMAZED that such a fantastic race drew only 85 runners
