    Big hills

As I understand it hills are a significant element in our sport of fell running.

I suspect the Daddy of them all is the Ben race, which I haven't done. It seems to me, on basic statistics and other criteria that nothing comes close in British fell races.

Kirk Fell in the Wasdale Show, Blorenge, Pendle Big End, Little Stand. Has anyone else got any favorite beastly big climbs?

The climb up Fairsnape on the Fiendsdale race.

Also the climb upto Hole in't Wall at the back end of the Grisedale Horseshoe.

Both took me completly by suprise when I first did those races.

The crawl on all fours up the last 300 feet of Whernside in the 3 peaks. That said the bastard last ascent in the Tour of Pendle comes close!

I was thinking of Whernside when I read this thread. It's not a technical climb like Ingleborough, it's just a hell of a slog.

The slog up Carnedd Dafydd in Ras Carneddau seems to take for ever.
The climbs in Long Mynd get progressively worse until the last one seems like Ben Nevis x 4!
But in reality, Ben Nevis is the daddy. You have to have done it to realise how tough it is.

Snowdon is the most difficult climb I have encountered yet and my favourite race. Not done Ben Nevis so can't comment on that one perhaps that is one for the future for me to have a bash at?

What route does the Snowden race follow? I've ran up the Watkins Path before which is a lovely run, coming back down the opposite ridge, but the climb isn't overly hard and most of it apart from some of the traverse across the side of Snowden towards the top was runnable.

Coniston country Fair was quality for the climbing a claimed 2400ft in a 6 mile race an out and back so the climbing all in 3 miles. The first mile runnable then the steepest climb I've encountered so far in fell racing. But for climb per mile it was a beast

I agree, particularly in the clag when you go the wrong way

I didn't think Snowdon was that bad (although still hard for me), I think the climb to Elidir Fawr through the quarry on the Peris was steeper/harder as it was all within the first 2.5-3 miles and so slippy on the slate inclines.
