    Exclamation Sugary Drinks & Gout

A news item day reckons that men who consume five or six sweet beverages a week were nearly 30% more likely to suffer attacks of gout than those who drank less than one serving monthly. The risk rose to 85% for those drinking two or more a day.

    See http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/20...01/health.gout

How many do you drink each week (based on 500ml = 1 sugary drink)?

what about a cup of tea with 5 sugars after a particularly hard fell race

85% risk when having two sugary drinks a day though...is now surely the first question to ask someone who suffers from gout

I don't really drink any 'pop', lots of different types of tea, grape juice with soda water is really refreshing, fruit juices and water mainly...and maybe occasionally at weekends some bambooze

i'll risk it for a biscuit

I've got to say the research is pretty flawed. As I read it, the chance of gout increases 85% if you drink sugary drinks twice a day compared to a person who drinks less than 1 a month. That sounds more like chance than real facts. Most things incresae by 85% if you do them 60 times more.
Add to this the fact one researcher is linking this to fructose based drinks, rather than diet pop, so orange and apple juice is off the menu. And so are apples and oranges. Then they say that this should be weighed up against the health benefits of eating apples and oranges. I'm sorry but it sounds like someone is trying to get a name for themselves in the scientific press.

Sorry if this sounds like I'm having go at you John, I'm not. I just think that some researchers need to do a bit more, well research.

Is beer a "sugary" drink?! If it is then I'm done for! Anyway - no info on maltose in that article!

I eat loads of fruit (which strangely has fructose in it!!) - should I stop immediately and switch to crisps or something?!
