Lakeland 100 Trail Race

The Lakeland 100 takes place on the weekend of August 9th & 10th and is the most spectacular long distance trail race which has ever taken place within the UK. The circular route encompasses the whole of the lakeland fells and consists entirely of public bridleways and footpaths. The route starts in Coniston and heads South before completing a clockwise loop which takes in the Dunnerdale fells, Eskdale, Wasdale and Buttermere before arriving in Keswick. From here the route heads to Matterdale and continues over to Haweswater before returning via Kentmere, Ambleside and Elterwater to the finish at Coniston. In addition to the Lakeland 100 there will also be a 50 mile supporting event which starts from Matterdale and finishes at coniston, both the 100 and the 50 mile event start at 7.00am on the Saturday morning and the final cut off will be 7.00pm Sunday evening

Not bad for that sort of event. I think insisting on GPS is taking some of the fun out of it though.

The use of GPS puts me rigt off, are you also insisting on the ability to use a compass as well as to read a map is essential because in my opinion the two go hand in hand, if so that then negates the need for GPS.

Yep and i think that is overpriced as well, (Although i do like my crystal Goblet), but i am racing the Devil `O` on the 9th of August.

I mostly agree but I don't think 75 quid is that bad for a hundred mile race. Getting permission must be a pain in the lakes and I'm surprised that they have managed to do it because of Park authority etc.
The GPS bit is crazy - loads of fell runners don't even owe one so they have reduced their market already.

However it is great that there is a market for events like this and hopefully someone soon will get it right and put on a great 100 mile race that might stop us having to go to france or the US.

Couldn't disagree more.

To condemn a race that's never been run as a "crock of shite" without knowing anything about the route and the organisation seems *way* premature. As to "money making", if it is, so what? Is making a profit so bad? It might mean that the race becomes a regular event rather than a one-year-wonder.

I think anybody who is prepared to organise a new event of this length and *only* charge £75 should be congratulated, not slated.
