    Re: Fred Whitton Challenge

Just got back from the Lakes where I've been reccying the FW route - it's a belter! I know the fells well but haven't done that much cycling there yet. Anyway, all the running up hills must have helped somehow - I've done precious little mileage on the bike for a good few months but I managed Hardknott OK, didn't have to get out of the saddle or use bottom gear until the very last bit (which is just bl**dy ridiculous!)

I did feel a bit weird being in the Lakes and not running though

Richard Virenque, Santiago Botero, Laurent Jalabert, watch out AllanT's in town, lock up your daughters
Trimm Trab, well done on taming Hardknott, told you you'd be fine

so how did everyone get on??? I managed 7:03 including a puncture and two too long stops at feeds due to the fantastic cake assortment! Great day, loved it... got up Hard Knott and Wrynose without dabbing but I did have a 34/27 bottom gear.

I was up there with the nippers supporting 'er Outdoors who was well chuffed with her 9hrs 17mins (8:45 hrs in t'saddle) on what was a scorching day. All the 6 months of training leading up to it clearly paid off as she was fine & dandy at the finish. Gran Frondo in Snowdonia for her in 2 weeks time while I'll be having a go at Ras Cader Idris which I've not done before.

Interesting that 2 of the top 3 finishers are fellrunners including Jebby who smashed the previous record finishing in 5:40 hrs!! See also that Angela Mudge was 1st lady back in 7hrs and a bit. It must annoy the hell out of all those serious roadies.

I think the guy who was first MV60 has done a bit of fell running as well.

Stood waiting on the finish line I did see Billy Bland come through although I couldn't find his name in the results.

I assume it is he you are referring to in tipping the wink. No doubt he jumped off his bike to run Sailbeck 1/2 way round!
