I often seem to run better with a cold. Seems like the painkillers the body produces to fight the cold allows me to run harder. Just make sure it's not flu! Take your resting pulse. If it is close to or just above normal there is no problem. If it is much higher don't run!!

On cycle training camp in Mallorca last year I started with a cold. On the 6th day my resting pulse before we set off was 90 when it is normally mid 40's. Common sense would say don't go or have a short ride but 4 of us went over Soller and back (124 miles). On the way back from Inca my HR stuck in the 160's and would not drop for the last 35 miles, even when going easy. Felt pretty good apart from that but probably was not the best idea in the world but I did not want to miss a good day's ride.

Fowler, see how you feel in the morning. Your head will be banging and your breathing will be shocking at the end whatever; especially if it's your 1st race!! Let us know how you get on - good luck!

    Re: Got a cold

Well im still unsure wether im guna do it. Half of me wants to do it but the other half doesnt. I was eating an apple before and i ran upstairs to my room, by the time i got to my run, i was gasping for breath.....and i can usually run up and down stairs all day long and not be out of breath. Common sence says dont run tomorrow but i will have to wait till moring.
    Fingers crossed.

In my experience racing with a cold is not a good idea at all.

Yes, I agree with David on this one Fowler; sounds like crap luck but you want to enjoy your first time (!) so if running upstairs leaves you knackered you'll really not have a good expereince tomorrow...sorry mate.

By all means see how you feel tomorrow (it is after all Easter and Miracles have happened at this time of year ) but enjoying the night nurse would be setting the right expectation...

By the way...what race is it you were aiaming at...?

...and a very good first race selection I would say (...had you been well of course!).

But there's races most weekends, and Midgley Moor next Saturday (although a bit longer and more climbing) would be an equally good, and even more challenging!, first race.

Get well soon and have a great race whichever you choose!
