Thanks for the tons of advice everyone.
I use Saucony shoes on the road, so will probably try the Grid Jazz, although after the comments about the recent weather, may try the Mizuno's.

Last year (as we all remember), was a nightmare, especially the downhills off Whernside and Ingleborough, worse than a road race! Will hope to meet you all on the day. Good luck with the training.

The first 3 miles are what I'd call farm trail to the top of PyG with the descent being half trail and half tussocky muddy grass and bog. At the 5 mile point it will be extremely boggy for the next two or so miles before turning into meadowy fields and then tracks and lanes down to the road. About a mile and a half of road to Ribblehead then another mile of trail before going seriously off track and trail onto the spongey grass (very boggy to begin with in places) of Whernside which, in the last 400 feet, becomes an on all fours climb up a rocky cliff side. Its trail along the top, broken boulders or cutting your own tussocky line (flags allowing) going down off of Whernside before finally hitting a farm track and then a road. Going up Ingleborough is grassy fields then track and then a mixture of boarded bog crossings and slabs to the steep wall, which is a scramblely walk. The top of Ingleborough is rubble as is the best part of the first two miles of descent. After that it goes seriously boggy with the odd limestone boulder to keep you on your toes.

Quite honestly you could probably wear any type of running shoe and find them equally useful and useless . I'm wearing my PB Trainers.

Meadowy fields - currently behaving more like well churned cow fields

I think i'm going to take a rucksack and put a choice of shoes in and change them when necessary, no need to decide then

or have a team of domestiques dotted around the course with the shoes - road/trail, followed by fell/trail, road, fell, road, trail, maybe fell and then racers for the final sprint..

I have geekily consulted the Met Office archives and rainfall for the north of England in first first 4 months of last year was 135% of average for January, 125% for February, 70% for March and 30% for April. April also had 150% of the normal average sunshine.

Admittedly these figures are for the north of England in general - the west side of the north is wetter than the east side (sometimes I think it must be the wettest place on God's earth) but, unless we get a brilliant warm and sunny April, don't count things being nearly so hard going for the 3P this year.
