I think we should cryo-freeze people, then their dead, but then if found not guilty then re-animate them...or use bits of em like Robbo-Cop.

Ah right. Interesting position you take there. Presumably then, you would agree and be happy with some of the more gruesome aspects that are described as Sharia law?

Proper tough prison time, without luxuries and without hope of release that's the way it should be, the death penalty although a deterrent to some, I don't think would stop the real sick individual acting upon their abhorrent needs, too often we hear that those who carry out the sickest of crimes have already done some prison time for similar offences and have then been released which is ludicrous .

In my world I would let the police and justice do its job but the victim or their family would do the sentencing if found guilty.

And yep death would be acceptable.

Not familiar with Sharia Law but if it punisher's the guilty it can't be that bad.

The victims and their families get their say now. But it's the whole of society who decide what is a crime and how it should be punished. Revenge should be a part of it but not all. a civilised society should also recognise the possibility of rehabilitation. Like your quote ironically.

Interesting that this old chestnut has resurfaced.

If you could stop a crime before it happened (like in Minority Report:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minority_Report_%28film%29), would you still impose a punishment?

The problem with that suggestion Stagger is that threats can be made against the victim/family by friends of the guilty. Pressure from the media and not forgetting your friendly neighbourhood vigilante nutjobs on the streets can also influence them. Letting the state do the sentencing at least removes that problem.
    No country for old men.
