Fish and chips and mushy peas, washed down with Vedett 5.2%, at Bia Mara in the Marché aux Poulets, Brussels. I knew that the Belgians were big on chips, but I didn't know that they were also into mushy peas. And was the food worth 17 euros? Yes, I think it was, the quality was excellent, and the quantity of chips would have been adequate if I had been for a 20-mile run.

I do like Brussels. And the Eurostar direct service makes it so convenient to get to.

Had planned to get to Antwerp and Gent last time i was there, but was unfortunately distracted by a rather nice French girl from Boulogne

Yes, I quite liked it, but my wife was less impressed. How can you not like a place with so many chocolate shops?

I was thinking that you could have an excellent cycle race around the streets, as tough as Paris-Roubaix: there's no rural mud, but that pavé!

Lunch at Cassius Garten in Bonn: a vegetarian buffet where you just load your plate with whatever you want, put it on the scales at the counter, and you're charged 2.40 euros per 100 grams of food. Great idea!

Out with the dogs this morning I gathered some field mushrooms and within half an hour of picking they were cooked in butter and eaten on toast. Delicious.
Visibility good except in Hill Fog

I picked some giant puffballs this weekend, had one a couple of mornings fried with my bacon. Very good. The rest went to the pub.

My partner picked 1.5 kg of blackberries from a spot on the flanks of Wansfell - washed/cooked/frozen ready for use in a crumble.

My partner used this recipe to make a crumble with some home grown pears and apples we were given - the crumble topping was so much nicer - more crumbly - than the average crumble.

My crumble toppings have a mixture of wholemeal flour and oats, and the sugar is entirely Demerara, which produces a good texture. Just round the corner from my house, there is a plum tree in a garden which leans over the fence above the pavement. There have been particularly rich pickings this year, although the rest of the family don't like plum crumble as much as blackberry or apple crumbles.
