Fish and chips and mushy peas, washed down with Vedett 5.2%, at Bia Mara in the Marché aux Poulets, Brussels. I knew that the Belgians were big on chips, but I didn't know that they were also into mushy peas. And was the food worth 17 euros? Yes, I think it was, the quality was excellent, and the quantity of chips would have been adequate if I had been for a 20-mile run.

I do like Brussels. And the Eurostar direct service makes it so convenient to get to.

Had planned to get to Antwerp and Gent last time i was there, but was unfortunately distracted by a rather nice French girl from Boulogne

Yes, I quite liked it, but my wife was less impressed. How can you not like a place with so many chocolate shops?

I was thinking that you could have an excellent cycle race around the streets, as tough as Paris-Roubaix: there's no rural mud, but that pavé!

Lunch at Cassius Garten in Bonn: a vegetarian buffet where you just load your plate with whatever you want, put it on the scales at the counter, and you're charged 2.40 euros per 100 grams of food. Great idea!
