Don't bother. Just listen to your body.

I think they help teach you how to listen to it David - I also like looking at the graphs after.

For 27 quid you could try a basic Polar model as linked below (Polar were the 1st to introduce HRM's and are reliable) - it is a watch and stopwatch as well as a HR monitor - ideal for racing/training. You get some literature with the watch explaining about training with HR zones but go to the library and read more into it. Many, many top athletes can't be wrong.

    Re: Heart Rate Monitor

I use one and think it helps me but only for the very high rate training or the very steady stuff.

David has a good point though.

It depends in my opinion on wether you run on your own a lot or with a group because you do look silly on a steady recovery one talking to yourself.

Mine came with the 301 Garmin so I just use it.

If someone did a study I bet the result would be that a high percentage of heart rate monitors end up in a drawer somewhere after a few months and never see the light of day again.

My advice would be to spend a bit less money on a copy of GrahamB's favourite book (no prizes ) which contains a lot of very useful and sensible training advice and a section on the whys and wherefores of using a heart rate monitor.

But if they tell the time and are a stop watch as well it's not money wasted although I can see you are not a fan.........

I've never felt the need for one myself although no doubt many find them useful. I think it is more important to study and understand the basic principles of training first.
