    Up and Down relay

I had the daft idea a few weeks ago of an up and down fell relay (where the first leg is mainly uphill, the second mainly downhill). That way great climbers could team up with great descenders. Also I thought, if such an event did exist, elite runners should be encouraged to run it solo, then only-moderately-elite teams have a chance of catching them.

I would like to point out that this is only hypothetical, and I have no desire to organise such an event. Not least because I can't think of a decent place to hold it without severe logistical problems.

So I figured if I put it to the forum, it would (a) give us something to talk about, and (b) someone might come up with a suitable location/route. Any ideas?

How about the Dorset coastal Path Relay? http://web.mac.com/richardsonjx/iWeb...elay/Home.html

I realise it's not on the fells, but it's beautiful countryside nonetheless. The teams choose where their runners swap over, so uphill & downhill specialists can come into their own. Some teams even arrange multiple legs on the hills!

Errm, but won't you fell ponies have an advantage seeing as you already have, ahem, two pairs of legs...? Does that mean you'd only run half the race?

Actually, in some cases, we'd have pairs of 3 legs !

Think its a stupidly splendid idea tho!

surely you'd want a leg across unmarked boggy moorland to make it a proper race, you know how much you enjoyed that at Noonstone!

Just thinking of possible venues. Anywhere outside Norfolk would do it, but Rivington Pike from near the school might be ok. Couple of miles up and down (I know how much Ady likes that climb ), say 4 legs, then off to the Crown. Could be good for a laugh.

Haha! Tremendous! I disticntly remember, as clearly do you, bitching about the noonstone section across the top. I take it, Boghobbit that you're a tod or caldervalley man....either that or a innocent bystander who overheard my bitching

In terms of venue....where the FRA relays were held last year at FELL FOOT Would be good. There's some cracking running up there. Imagine a paired leg up one side of Parlick and quickly over and down the other.
