In the woods at my house the squirrel activity is always amusing and lots of it, but the other day whilst running I disturbed a huge pack? of them! Maybe around 10 - 15 of them all dashing around in the leaves it was quite a sight! Watching them disperse up trees all around me was fantastic and my dog didn't know which way to go!
http://www.mikkmurray.co.uk - My art and running blog! Go on.. Take a look!
Kingfisher a few days ago while visiting relatives in Oxford. It was on an off-shoot of the Thames near the university boathouses. It's a while since I've seen one, so I was very pleased.
My 6-month-old dog made it a more memorable run by falling in the Thames and needing hoisting out three times!
a field of Lapwings this morning...
at the moment we are visited daily by the kingfisher,my camera fails to give good enough resolution,i will keep trying to capture him
Here's a rarity for the peak, thought I'd taken a wrong turn and ended up in Scotland.
3 herds yes three herds of deer, big ones and what looked like 2 stags 8-10 pointers and then some highland cattle. just off white edge where you can find lots of adders in summer.
I was checking out a new night navigation course but conditions underfoot were diabolical though not much running done at all.
watched 4 crows chasing a buzzard, the buzzard beat is wings once to the crows 4,
he just kept going round in small circles, gradually gaining height.
the crows then dropped off one by one.
do you think the squabble was over food
Could have been; but with crows, they get huffy at anything that might pose a threat ( i.e. bigger than themselves ) that flies through what they perceive to be their territory.
In the mid-70's I worked as an instrument mechanic for the old Lancashire River Authority ( became Rivers Division of North West Water Authority then was absorbed into the Environmental Agency ). Once, when I was calibrating the rainfall recorder behind the old asbestos works in Kentmere, one of the golden eagles from Mardale flew over. Immediately, all the crows alighted from their nests and roosts in the tall woodland and mobbed the eagle. The eagle did not even beat his wings, just glided right through the mob of crows without making any contact. Despite all the posturing, each of the crows knew when to give way.
I was a bit of an oddball until I was abducted by aliens; but I'm perfectly OK now!
half a mile down the valley two days ago there was a bit of a twitch
lots of folk with telescopes and binoculars.
The assembled group were watching a rare visitor..a two banded(barred?) cross bill
