Descending from Wansfell Pike this afternoon I saw my first cuckoo - it flew in a curve in front of me, calling as it did so.

Saw lots of hares as usual up around Bleaklow yesterday, and many young birds. I love this time of year

Early this week I was at Barry Budden, just near Dundee and there were dozens of Oyster Catchers nesting with eggs and then we saw a couple of the nests hatch, including one about 10 feet from my window, quite a nice alarm clock if it was not active from around 0500. Also saw a couple of Whimbrel, never seen them before but the RSPB bird identifier is great.

... continuous effort - not strength or intelligence - is the key to unlocking our potential.
I woke up at about 6.15 this morning to the usual sound of birds in the garden, then realised I could hear a skylark as well. Which was nice. In New Mills!
Peregrine - attacking another bird mid air above Mosedale while I was ascending to Wind Gap on way up Pillar

Scramble the rock face through the glare of morning sun — to run
Half a dozen or so golden plover on Cross Fell and the Dun Fells last night.
A few fighting cocks on 'The Rules' thread.
This evening I watched the 'Django Unchained', a modern Western film; reminded me so much of that thread
A Cuckoo, trolling the nest of another bird.
A toad on a footpath I was running on, nearly trod on it! I assume it was a common toad as Natterjacks live on the coast in the dunes but it had two dark yellowish stripes one either side of the backbone. Natterjacks have one down the middle of their backs and common toads don't have any as far as I know. Do Natterjacks interbreed with common toads or maybe it was just a pigmentation change?
No country for old men.
