Thread: Today's Wildlife Encounter

Lovely hedgehog visiting our garden patio.
I'm thinking of building him a house and providing food. Not counting on the food this guy probably already steals from the squirrels, which in turn they "steal" from us (or is it us that we give it to them on purpose...?). Never mind...
I read somewhere meat based food for cats or dogs is great for them. Fine.

    Question:
how do we ensure the food we provide will not attract rats instead?

I fear the answer is that we can't be choosy on whom comes to our garden...

    comments? suggestions? anything...?

I can't think of any way to feed your hedgehogs that would not be available to the rats. If the hedgehog can reach the food then so can the rats.
But you do have a trail camera 😉, so put the feed out for the hogs and a couple of nights a week monitor it with the camera, if rats are spotted you have to stop feeding - and do whatever you have to do with Mr ratty.
Don't roll with a pig in poo. You get covered in poo and the pig likes it.

My parents have similar... have a couple of bird feeders in the garden and they love watching the birds, of which there are many.... they even get a Sparrowhawk pass by every few days.

But also attracts Grey Squirrels running across the walls and roofs.

I have explained that you can't really be selective about which animals decide to take advantage of the food on offer.

There's a lot to be said for an air rifle and a cold heart 😉.

At the weekend I saw a life raptor kill. My grandson found a bat in the attic and took it outside to release it at night. But it escaped and flew around above us. Instantly, a raptor (possibly a sparrow hawk) swooped in a flew off with poor batty struggling in his talons like Raquel Welch under a pterodactyl. Astonishing!

I used to enjoy killing the grey squirrels trying to steal the bird food from my feeders?

    Am I a bad person?

Of course. We had full bat mitigation for our annexe rebuild. Bats have powerful protection. However, 6 year olds may not be aware!

A herd of about 20 red deer, at least one of which had large antlers, on today's run up towards Wincle Minn. They were in a field but all bounced over a fence when they saw me.

Nice to see, but I'm a little less well disposed to deer having pulled a tick of my leg after the weekend trip to the Lakes. Thankfully no target-shaped rash, or flu-like symptoms yet, but I'm keeping vigilant as I hear these can develop a while later.
