I have had three interesting encounters recently.

Yesterday, descending through Winterseeds farm, I was swooped several times by a bird I never saw. I had my cap on to keep the sun out of my eyes, and the brim did not help my powers of observation.

The last time I came off Fairfield there was a Highland Longhorn on the path - I know thy are docile but I still chose to go around it. Lower down there was a goat and its kid - initially they moved away, but then the mother turned and stood her ground - again, I chose to give her a wide berth.

Out for another Cuckoo walk with my wife. Heard them first on Snowdon, then on Tuesday on Barden Moor.

Today was special! Walked from Timble Ings out towards Round Hill (North of Ilkley) and down toward Lower Dearncomb (above March Ghyll Reservoir). We heard three diffrent cuckoos on the way. After a nice picnic we walked up towards Gawk Hall Gate. At the top of the plantation there were 4 Cuckoos flying around. Chasing each other, feeding on the ground and calling. Very visible with the naked eye, they came really close to us and my wife found a tail feather.
All the normal moorland birds were seen and heard with a great sighting of a pair of Stonechats with 3 young.

A large bronze Slow Worm glinting in the sun this morning.

He/She/Them/They wasn't very slow when my strimmer approached!

Out sheriff Hutton way, late walking through fields watching a barn owl hunting, head down looking for prey with a strong wind managing to hover like a drunk kestrel.

Pied flycatchers - a nest in one of the bird boxes in the garden. A joy to watch them diligently bringing flies back, and you can see the little chicks' screaming for more through the little hole in the box. Just like watching Springwatch!

On yesterdays bike ride whilst on a slight downhill I startled a Greater Spotted Woodpecker and it flew, with its distinctive undulating flight, parallel to me at head height and around 10 feet to my left for around 30 to 40 yards before disappearing into a copse.
Around 20 minutes later I saw one of the Clywedog Ospreys returning to its nesting platform.

Yesterday on the Carneddau three herds of Welsh Mountain Ponies, some of them with foals. A wonderful sight, especially when they started galloping, with their manes and tails blowing in the wind.

One stallion came charging off Drosgl, towards another runner and I, and crossed our path only 20 feet in front of us. Fantastic.

How many runners did you overtake whilst riding the stallion?
Don't roll with a pig in poo. You get covered in poo and the pig likes it.

If I could have caught it I'd have been aboard. In fact words were exchanged along the lines of "I wish I could run that fast"!

Oh, I've just remembered, I heard a cuckoo on my way up to Drum.
