I don't think they are directly comparable. 3 peaks is hard precisely because the running is on easier ground for a lot of it, so the pace goes up and when you hit the serious climbs of Whernside and Ingleborough it hurts! However, Borrowdale is much rougher underfoot and there isn't really that many sections you can recover on, you're either climbing up a mountain, or descending down very rough rocky ground, so not much opportunity to get a rhythm going and disperse the lactic etc. from your muscles. I've done both, and DNF'd on the peaks (although that was a couple of years ago) and managed to hang on for Borrowdale. I'll let you know next April when I have a good crack at the peaks again.
Bottom line is, they're both hard, but very different.

Cheers for all the response. From what I've seen and heard its as I feared, Borrowdale looks tougher. I'm definatley gonna have a go at it next year, but as I live in Hull (3.5 hr drive to Lakes) its gonna be tough getting the training in that I need.
Stair climber at gym or cross trainer on high resistance maybe would help. I suffered a lot at Borrowdale despite putting in a lot of hill work. Unless you live in the lakes it's hard to get long enough climbs in. My personal conclusion is that I'll continue with the hill work but I need stronger legs too so I'm working on that with the bike and cross trainer as well.
