What David has said rings sort of true for me. My sister went to Uni, and was supported by our parents, including for an extra year to do a follow on course. I left education at 17, went to work, and paid a tenner a week until I left home a few years later. My parents viewed it that I was getting no more than my sister had, albeit they financed her with cash whereas I got food, washing and ironing. Oh the joy of not having to iron.....

My 19 yr is currently working, saving up for his gap year trip (which starts in 2 weeks). So, it seems a bit futile taking money back off him now as I want to avoid that long distance reverse charge phone call when he runs out of cash in some foreign fleshpot. Mind you, I draw the line at funding his 3 hour 2am phone calls to the girlfriends mobile especially when land line calls and Skype are 'free'. So I sting him for his hefty contribution to the phone bill.

I left school in 1978 to serve my time as a apprentice joiner.Ist wage was £22 of which £5 had to go for my board ,For this i was fed and alowed ONE bath a week each one after that me and my brother had to wait until our dad had gone to sleep before we switched on the emmesion heater and take a bath.
If he woke up and caught us we had to pay 50p,Eventualy he confiscated the plug and gave it to us as and when.
There is loads more where that came from!
Our lad left home and married at 19 yrs old .
    I hung on until i was 21 .

I hope this thread isn't going to turn into the '3 Yorkshire men' python sketch!

I didn't have to pay anything for board as such, but when I got to uni my dad could only pay the tuition fees, so had to work throughout uni to pay my way there, which was a steep learning curve in itself.
